BEIJING - Exports to the US from the Xinjiang region of China are reportedly down by 90% since the Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act (UFLPA) came into effect last June.

They crashed to US$497,440 in February, the first time on record they fell below US$1 million, while apparel - once the region's top export to the US disappeared completely, according to Chinese customs data quoted by the South China Morning Post.

UFLPA, which bans US imports from Xinjiang on the presumption they were made with forced labour, was introduced over forced labour concerns involving incarcerated Uyghur Muslims in the region which supplies a fifth of the world's cotton.
